December 15, 2007. Dennis and Mary Bawden recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in Eureka. Dennis and Mary met in the fall of 1970 while they were students at Humboldt State University and were married December 9, 1972 in Arcata. Mary graduated in June of 1972 and Dennis graduated the following spring.
Originally from southern California, they have remained in Humboldt County since college and have since retired here. Dennis was an employee of Humboldt County for more than 20 years, while Mary worked for the State for twenty plus years.
Both have been attending UCC First Congregational in Eureka since the early '90s and have held numerous leadership roles throughout their time there.
Dennis and Mary have one daughter Annie Bawden of San Francisco. She graduated from Eureka High School in 2001 and received her B.A. from U.C. Riverside in 2005.
Mr. Bawden still enjoys riding his motorcycle and reading. Mrs. Bawden is currently a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Both enjoy traveling in and out of California.
September 19, 2008. The following is from David Bawden in Washington state: This summer I will travel to England with the bronze piece I created to place on a grave marker I will purchase in Cornwall for our great grandparents Richard and Ann Bawden. They are buried at Illogan, Cornwall, England in an unmarked grave.
If any of you Bawden relatives would like to help with this project by making a contribution, great. Click here to view a picture of the piece I created and will place on the grave marker. If you are interested in having a piece cast for your own use at cost, contact me. Dave Bawden
October 27, 2008. Some of the details of next summer's memorial in Illogan are starting to be set. It looks like the ceremony will be held near the last weekend in June. Dave Bawden is continuing to facilitate many aspects of this project including the placement of the marker on Richard and Ann Bawden's grave.
On a similar note, a traditional Cornish funeral hymn was recently recorded for us by a local Humboldt County band Good Company . This piece of music is reported to have originated in the 16th century in Constantine, Cornwall. This, of course, is the small village where our ancestors lived for many centuries. The sheet music for this piece comes from a 1930s article and was provided to us with the help of the Cornish Studies Library in Redruth. ( Link to sheet music. )
